The Elder Scrolls The Official Cookbook Chelsea MonroeCassel 9781683833987 Books Reviews
- I ordered this for my sister-in-law who loves Skyrim as a Christmas present. When I ordered it I expected another kinda gimmicky game tie-in that had a couple recipes and some references to the game. What we got was so much better!
This arrived in the mail today and it's beautiful! It's got dozens of recipes each with cooking instructions, lore, and full page photos of the finished products. They even have spice mixtures (like Nord Spices) to serve as a 'base' for dishes from that culture! She has done nothing but giggle excitedly since she saw it and is so excited to try out the recipes!
I bought it for $16 (currently sitting at around $20) and I really feel like it is a steal for such an immersive high-quality book. There really was a lot of love put into this and I'm so glad that it's not just some gimmick!
I'll try to update once we've tried out some of the recipes. - I am a HUGE Elder Scrolls fan, and I love to cook and bake so I OBVIOUSLY had to pre-order this book the moment I knew it existed a few months back!
I just received to book today and I have to say it is absolutely stunning! The cover is beautiful - I love the glossy accenting on the matte cover - and all of the pages are in vivid full color. It is making me want to fire up Skyrim again and start a new adventure, I find myself missing my Argonian husband and our little nest!
So I open this beauty and start reading through the recipes. I can’t wait to try every. Single. One! I’m literally making one of the recipes right now - Lavender and Honey Bread - and I’m so excited to taste it!
I own another of Chelsea’s books - “A Feast of Ice and Fire The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook†- so I already knew her recipes are magnificent. I knew this book wouldn’t disappoint!
There are recipes for all skill levels so I truly believe there is something for everyone!
I highly recommend this book to ALL fans, whether they cook or not! - I was so excited when this arrived today. I have been reading through it, and it is incredibly awesome. While not every recipe looks tempting to me, there are so many that do look tasty that I'm unsure where to start. I'm sure the ones that I am less interested in are still going to be tasty for those that are.
It even has mead and cordial recipes! I'm going to make so many delicious things!
Cons
I went to make the boiled cream treats (pg 153), and found that it says to bake them for 12-15 minutes, but does not say at what temperature to bake them. I am hoping 350 works. - I've always loved Skyrim and when I heard T.E.S the official cookbook was coming out I just had to have it. Urag gro-Shub at the college of Winterhold was looking for this one..unfortunately I will not be giving it into him because ITS MINE NOW. It arrived a few hours ago at my front gate and I couldn't wait to check it out. Now I don't have the ingredients to make and eat any of the things in here at the moment, however I can rate it based on other things that I really like.
This book is laid out quite well..and when I open it up and look for a recipe, I feel like I'm in the world of Skyrim looking through a book..that's like the only way I know how to describe it right now. Every page has the recipe on the right and a beautiful ultra high res picture of it on the left and not only that but the pages with the recipes on them have a Skyrim themed background to them. Not only is it beautifully made, but as a plus there is also a page at the beginning dedicated to telling you what dishes go with what races of Tamriel and how the dishes reflect their culture.
All in all this cookbook is really nice and I wasn't exactly sure what to expect since there is only a hand full of pictures on the product page. You can always look up a recipe online however I appreciate holding a beautiful physical copy of them like this book, like a true Nord! I'm going to become a chef one day soon and well this cookbook is just adding to my passion. If you guys buy this cookbook you should not be disappointed, well unless you burn your knee in the kitchen or something. - I was expecting a short book with just a few recipes in it, only to get it and it has 189 pages. Some of the recipes I will NEVER try (I’m looking at you apple and cabbage soup and grilled leeks), but for the most part they all look amazing. It comes with spice recipes, baked, meat, drinks (alcoholic ones too, yes) soups and lore written into the first few pages. I’m very happy with it and would recommend it to other Elder Scrolls fans.
- I pre-ordered this book for a friend for his birthday. He already had the Fallout Cookbook so this would be a great addition to his collection. We had tried a few of the recipes from the Fallout book (like homemade Nuka Cola!) and loved them. When the Skyrim Cookbook arrived I was not disappointed. The book is high quality with a beautiful, full page , full color picture of every dish. The pictures themselves are amazing. The setting pieces give me ideas for dishes I want to buy to enjoy these amazing recipes on.
The recipes themselves are great. After flipping through the book my wife, who is NOT a gamer and has never played Skyrim (I know! I know! I'm working on that) asked me to buy her a copy of the cookbook. So, of course, I did.
My son and I are both Celiacs (Gluten-Free). The recipes seem to be easily adjusted to our particular needs (my friend has already made the proper adjustments to a couple recipes from the Fallout book). Oh, and the recipes call for ingredients that I have never heard of before - Star Anise? For the Fallout recipes we had to go explore Asian grocery stores and search online for some of the more esoteric ingredients. It was an adventure just to gather the proper component for our brews. For me, that is a bonus. A real life Skyrim quest!
Buy this book, your stomach will thank you! (Maybe your wife will too!)
