From the very first week of Tim Clancy's 25-year career as a high school English teacher, he began to notice and collect funny and strange moments he discovered in his students' writing, such as "The word 'witch' has become a household word, like 'spatula,'" and "Wherever excitement is, there will always be romance. Trust me." He would occasionally share them with his classes, who enjoyed them as much as he did, and so this book was born. Best in Class collects nearly 200 of the most entertaining of these moments culled from real student writing and complements them with dozens of playful illustrations to create a sympathetically hilarious book for anyone who has muddled their way through the wilderness of a school writing assignment.

"This book reminds me of Art Linkletter and his lineup of children who “say the darndest things.†Well, as Tim Clancy learned when he was a newbie to English teaching, they write the darndest things too. Is that really a word? There’s a whole section of words that really aren’t words in here ... or are they? In his first week of teaching, Tim came across his first gem written by a student, but it wouldn’t be the last. He then began “copying lines from student writing assignments that [he] found amusing, intriguing, or simply entertaining.†And so, twenty-five years later we now have a compilation of the best. Oh, and some of those students of his thought they were pretty darned amusing too.
Some of the philosophical tidbits students came up with in Tim’s class are mind-boggling. For example you’ll learn that “today if you go home and accomplish nothing but getting yourself to the couch, it would be the same as ham and horse turds.†I sure would like to have been a fly on the wall when Tim was in his jammies correcting that paper! Now one student declares that “green food is either moldy or it’s a vegetable, and I don’t like either one.†Now there might be a bit of truth to that statement. And then there was the bucket list item:
“Spending twelve hours in Walmart was on my list of things to do before I die, and now I can scratch it off.â€
And to think I only had to travel a short distance to scratch something off that bucket list instead of spending all that money to get to Beijing! Then of course there are those fabulous words the kids came up with. Nomadder what you read in this book, you’ll certainly find many gems to laugh about. If you’re an English teacher and are a “last remnant of the unhalucinagenic society,†you’ll love passing this book around the teachers room. I didn’t teach English, but definitely enjoyed reading each and every one of the two-hundred tidbits of wisdom in this book!"

- I immediately started bookmarking my favorite quotes,
here are a couple
"Most of the people in Huck Finn are kind of disgusting. They're either drunks or women in bonnets"
so random I roared!
"If it weren't for Monday night football, many people would be either sick or possibly dead right now"
"My friend Connie is a normal, strange and calm sixteen year old. What makes her a good friend is she listens to heavy metal and collects glass animals for a hobby"
I am so thrilled with my hardbound book of Best in Class. A truly unique and hilarious collection of teenage kids saying the darndest things. Would be a perfect gift for anyone! - This was a fun read. I needed a good laugh and Mr. Clancy's collection did not disappoint. I can imagine this little book in every teacher's lounge across America. It would also make a great gift for a Teacher. Open the book to any page and you will be chuckling. ( In many cases wheezing.) I am going to put this book on the nightstand in my guest room. I bought an extra copy to send to my friend. I know she will get a kick out of it.
